Couch To 5k: A How-to for fat-asses

Semper Paratus.

Oh man, oh man. So I'm going to run. There's nothing a fat kid hates more than running - except maybe shopping for pants or public pools.

I don't have shit to run in - go figure. I have plenty of clothes for lounging around, plenty of work clothes, but hardly anything suitable for running. I just finished on Amazon buying some Reebok moisture wicking shorts and t-shirts, as well as a pair of good running shoes. When people see me jogging and make fun, it won't be for the gear!

After doing some research in to shoes, and looking at the wear pattern of every pair I have ever owned - it appears I am an over-pronator. What does it mean, you ask? It means my natural gait makes my foot roll strongly to the outside edge. If you are an over-pronator you need running shoes with a "control" feature, preventing over-pronating. After some miserly price/ feature comparing I settled on a pair of Reebok Control III running shoes. They're normally $110.00 but I found them for $40.00 on Amazon. In addition, they have a large air-cushioned heel to help mitigate the cartilage punishing effects of 375 Lbs. of wheezing fatty relentlessly pounding down upon them. Granted, initially there will be less running and more of a gasping, hyperventilated force-march to the melody of my iTunes library, but it's nice to know they're capable even if I'm less so.

Next, I must take in to account sweating. Now, I sweat eating dinner. I can only imagine that in the next few weeks I will have a much expanded definition of what sweat is, and what it means to do so. To keep the sweat out of my face I am going to invest in a good sweatband. By good, I mean absorbent. I am thinking of a sham-wow wrapped around my head like a turban. Or perhaps a diaper. Apparently sweaty feet are a big concern as well. In addition to looking for a sweatband at the mall tonight I will be looking for some runner's socks. They are super-well-ventilated to help keep your feet cool, and help wick moisture away from your foot.

Next post, I'll be covering what couch to 5k is, and why I think (hope) a ponderous chubster like me can attempt it.

About Me

I've been a vegan for a couple of years now. While initially I enjoyed some moderate weight loss I've lately noticed it creeping back on. So now something new - EXCERCISE. Lots of it, and the hard kind, too.
